Trigger Point Massage and Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT)

Discover Relief with Neuromuscular Therapy
Neuromuscular Massage Therapy (also called neuro massage), including Trigger Point Therapy targets chronic pain, soft tissue injuries, and muscle dysfunction. Unlike general relaxation massage, NMT addresses the root causes of pain to restore balance and improve function. It can be used as a stand-alone therapy or complement physical therapy to alleviate pain, enhance mobility, and support recovery.
At Massage Therapy Group, we specialize in therapeutic massage. Through our in-house NMT training, our skilled therapists blend advanced knowledge of anatomy and pathology with hands-on expertise to deliver effective, targeted treatments for a wide range of conditions.

What are Neuromuscular and Trigger Point Massage Therapy?

A specialized form of therapeutic massage, Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT) is a targeted, clinical approach to manual therapy that uses trigger point techniques to relieve muscle tension and referred pain, and addresses nerve compression, and entrapment. It enhances circulation, reduces tightness, and addresses imbalances causing chronic pain, nerve impingement, or limited mobility. A well-trained NMT therapist treats areas that many massage therapists are not equipped or trained to address

How Neuromuscular Therapy Can Help.

Neuro Massage is especially effective in treating the following conditions:

1. Nerve Root Compression

This occurs when nerves exiting the spinal cord are compressed or pinched, often due to bulging or herniated discs, bone spurs, or postural imbalances. Nerve root compression can cause symptoms like:

2. Nerve Entrapment

Nerve entrapment happens when muscles, fascia, or other soft tissues compress a nerve, restricting its movement and function. Common examples include carpal tunnel syndrome or thoracic outlet syndrome and piriformis syndrome. Symptoms may include:

3. Trigger Point Massage

Trigger points are hyperirritable muscle spots that often cause referred pain, felt in areas different from their sources—such as a neck trigger point causing headaches or shoulder pain. NMT targets and treats these points, alleviating referred pain and enhancing muscle function

Why Choose Neuromuscular and Trigger Point Massage Therapy?

Neuromuscular Massage Therapy is more than just a massage—it’s a therapeutic solution to persistent pain and dysfunction. Here’s why NMT is so effective:

Benefits of Neuromuscular Therapy

What to Expect During an NMT Session

Your session begins with a consultation to assess pain and dysfunction. The therapist uses firm, targeted pressure and strategic positioning to address trigger points and muscle tension, aiming to relieve pain, improve mobility, and correct postural imbalances. While the pressure may feel intense, communication is key—your therapist will check in to ensure it remains comfortable (typically a 4–6 on a 1–10 scale). Always let your therapist know if the pressure feels too intense.

FAQs

Is Neuromuscular Massage Therapy painful?
NMT can involve firm pressure, which may feel intense at times, especially when working on trigger points or areas of tension. However, the goal is to provide relief, not pain. Always communicate with your therapist to ensure your comfort.
Multiple sessions are often necessary for complex or long-standing issues. Initially, schedule sessions about a week apart (no more than two weeks) to disrupt the pain-spasm-pain cycle and maintain progress. As your condition improves, sessions can be spaced further apart. Eventually, treatment may end, or you might transition to a maintenance schedule.
Unlike general massage, NMT focuses on treating specific conditions by targeting the root causes of pain. It requires advanced anatomical knowledge and precise techniques to alleviate nerve compression, entrapment, and trigger points.
The number of sessions depends on your condition. While some clients feel relief after one visit, chronic or complex issues often require 3 to 4 sessions or more for lasting results. For best outcomes, sessions are typically scheduled about a week apart at first to break the pain-spasm-pain cycle. As symptoms improve, visits can be spaced out or transitioned to a maintenance schedule as needed.
Yes, NMT can reduce pain and improve mobility in areas affected by old injuries by releasing scar tissue and improving if not restoring proper muscle function.
Check with your provider to see if NMT is reimbursable under your plan, especially if it’s prescribed for a medical condition. Typically therapeutic massage is an out-of-pocket expense, direct health insurance coverage is rare.

Therapeutic massage does not require a referral. However, in New Jersey, patients with a referral from an MD or chiropractor are exempt from paying sales tax and may improve reimbursement through an FSA or HSA medical expense account. At the time of service receipts are available upon request and may be applied to itemized tax deductions* or medical expense account reimbursements*. (*Please consult your tax advisor to confirm deductibility and health insurance provider for reimbursement eligibility.)
